Roof moss removal in Lincolnshire
A mossy roof in Lincolnshire needs low pressure and a biocide, then a few weeks for the growth to die back and wash off in the rain. High pressure takes it off faster and costs more later: it dislodges tiles, strips the surface granules off concrete ones and drives water under the laps.
How the job goes
- The photos A few shots from the garden show which slopes are affected, how thick the growth is and whether there is anything on the roof that will not take weight.
- Clearing the bulk Thick moss is scraped and brushed off dry where it lifts, working from a ladder or a tower rather than from the tiles themselves. The debris comes out of the gutters at the same time, because that is where it all ends up.
- The biocide A roof-safe biocide goes on at low pressure, at the dilution the surface takes. It is not rinsed off: it keeps working for weeks and the weather does the rest.
- Weeks later Lichen and the black streaking fade progressively rather than overnight. That is the biocide working, not a job half done.
What this does not cover
Loose, slipped or cracked tiles are photographed and pointed out rather than replaced — that is a roofer’s trade. Ridge pointing, flashing, chimney and valley work sit outside it too. Nothing gets walked on that will not take the weight, which occasionally means a roof cannot be done at all; that gets said from the photos, not after a wasted visit.
Questions about roof moss removal
Will the moss grow straight back?
Not straight back, no. A biocide kills the spores it reaches, so regrowth starts from whatever drifts in afterwards — which on a shaded north slope under trees is a good deal faster than on an open south one. Treated roofs in this county tend to want looking at again every few years rather than every season.
Is scaffolding needed to reach a two-storey roof?
Usually not. Most of the work is done from a ladder, a tower or from the ground with a long lance, and the photos decide which. Where a roof can only be reached safely with a scaffold, that is a cost from a scaffolding firm and it gets raised before anything is agreed, not discovered halfway through.
Why is the roof not spotless the day after?
Because the biocide works over weeks, not minutes. Moss cushions come off on the day; lichen spots and black streaking are stains in the surface of the tile and they fade as the growth dies and the rain washes it. A roof that looks perfect the same afternoon has almost always been pressure washed, and that is the expensive kind of clean.
